The White Monk Tearoom is located in the unique village of Blanchland, South Northumberland in the Upper Derwent Valley & part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Steeped in history, the village's origins can be traced back to the 12th Century, when French Premonstratensian Monks came to this country and built themselves a monastery; parts of which still stand and form the modern-day village. It has also played a part in the Jacobite rising and been a centre for the growth of mining in the area.

Today people visit Blanchland for the scenic drive, to walk, stay at the hotel, visit the shops and art gallery, sail & fish at the Derwent Reservoir or just to wander and soak up the special atmosphere and visit interesting relics of the Abbey. You may even see a ghost! But of course a visit to Blanchland would not be complete without a visit to the White Monk Tearoom.

The tearoom is situated in the Old School, built in 1866, which has been tastefully refurbished to reflect its idyllic setting. There is also a delightful walled garden to spend a sunny day drinking coffee with friends.

Traditional Afternoon Tea Image

The White Monk is a traditional tearoom with friendly waitress service, using white china cups, saucers and plates to serve traditional afternoon teas, teatime treats as well as light lunches and morning coffee. We use locally sourced ingredients and prepare and bake most items on the premises. We have a seasonal lunchtime special and always have gluten free and dairy free options available on the menu.
